Deschamps: France Deserved Draw Against Spain

France coach Didier Deschamps lauded his players while Spain’s Vicente Del Bosque was disappointed in his following the 1-1 draw between France and Spain in Madrid on Tuesday.

Deschamps felt Les Bleus deserved the point they earned against the World and European Champion, which came in the 94th minute thanks to a perfectly placed header from substitute Olivier Giroud.

”In the first half we struggled, although we defended well, but they didn’t allow us much of the ball and we showed practically nothing in attack, but don’t forget we had a perfectly legal goal disallowed,” Deschamps told reporters after the match. ”During the second half we showed presence and had more chances because we played freely and deserved our point…the intention was to be more ambitious as the game progressed.”

Del Bosque, meanwhile, lamented Spain’s missed penalty and lack of organization in the second half.  “We should have been better,” he said. “At 1-0 we took our foot off the gas. The truth is that we opened up in the second half, and they got a lot tighter. We should not have drawn this game.”
