[OHIO STATE-MICHIGAN] Tiffany Cameron scored two goals to break the Ohio State single-season scoring record and lead the
Buckeyes to a 3-1 win over Michigan in a battle of ranked Big Ten teams Thursday evening at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The loss was the first for the Wolverines in nine conference matches.
“This win definitely boosted our confidence and puts us in a good spot going forward,” Cameron said. “To break the record tonight means a lot but I couldn’t have done it
without my teammates. They have been great and hopefully this is just another feat in a great season for us.”
The record was previously set at 13 by Swiss star Lara Dickenmann in 2004 and Lisa Collison in 2005.
Michigan then took the 1-0 lead in the 18th minute when Nkem Ezurike finished with a backwards flick over the head of Ohio State goalkeeper Rachel Middleman from eight yards out off
a corner, but Cameron tied it for the Buckeyes in the 27th minute. Five minutes later, Samantha Lewis gave the Buckeyes a 2-1 advantage.
Things
stayed quiet until the 65th minute when Cameron put the Buckeyes up 3-1 with a header from six yards out off a corner from Megan Fuller.
Kristen Niederhaus almost added to the lead in the 71st minute but her shot from the top of the box caromed off the crossbar.
“As the game became
more hectic, we found a way to settle down,” OSU coach Lori Walker said. “We were able to get a goal and fight our way back. As we got ahead and
faced a lot of pressure, we were able to calm down. I’m really happy with how we’re playing and the combinations of different players scoring goals and getting assists makes us really
difficult to stop.”
