Real Madrid’s loss, on a rainy night in Dortmund, was its 17th defeat in 24 Champions League trips to Germany, with only one win. The three points for Borussia Dortmund gave 80,000 fans reason to celebrate, as BVB is now on top of Group D, and in good shape to advance.

Robert Lewandoski’s goal in the 36th minute opened the scoring on a slick field at the Westfalenstadion. Ronaldo and Schmelzer skipped the playing surface altogether, with first touch goals from midair.

    I only managed to catch the first half--and that was enough to get the sense that this was going to be a battle. What a true Champions League match!
