Scotland Coach Given the Boot

  • Guardian, Tuesday, November 6, 2012 12:13 PM

Following a poor start to World Cup qualifying, the Scottish Football Association relieved coach Craig Levein of his duties on Sunday night. Scotland currently sits at the bottom of Group A, below Wales, Macedonia, Serbia, and the joint-leaders Croatia and Belgium, which have 10 points, eight ahead of Scotland with 2.

Levein will be paid the remaining value of his contract, around $1.1 million, over the next 20 months unless he finds another coaching job. Former Celtic coach Gordan Strachan is they heavy favorite to replace him, although Joe Jordan and Alex McLeish are other names linked with the now-vacant post.

In 12 competitive matches in charge of Scotland, Levein presided over just 3 wins. Scotland’s 5-1 loss to the United States in Jacksonville in May was one of its heavier defeats. Scotland is currently ranked 56th in the world by FIFA.
