Galaxy knocks out Earthquakes

[MLS CUP PLAYOFFS: San Jose Los Angeles] The San Jose Earthquakes' looked to be in the driver's seat against the Los Angeles Galaxy after winning, 1-0, at the Home Depot Center, but Supporters' Shield champions gave up three goals to the Galaxy in the first half of the second leg and lost, 3-1, to go out 3-2 on aggregate.

-- The turning point came early in the 12th minute when Honduran Victor Bernandez went off with a sprained right knee and was replaced by Ike Opara.

-- Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan, who had both been quiet for much of the first leg, tormented the Quakes' backline. The Galaxy played with an energy absent in the first leg and scored three goals in 18 minutes in the first half.

-- Keane scored with a shot off the far post as Opara failed to close him down. Donovan then set up Keane and Mike Magee for goals to put the Galaxy up two on aggregate.

-- The Quakes had scored 10 goals against Los Angeles in their first four meetings -- three wins and one draw -- but could only put one goal from Alan Gordon past Josh Saunders.

-- Chris Wondolowski, who tied an MLS record with 27 goals in the regular season, was held scoreless in the conference semifinals. “I know right off the bat I had three very good chances,” he said. “I missed all three, and I let the team down.”

Injury to centerback Bernardez significantly weakened SJ down the middle...LD showed up and Keane et al delivered.
