London police have halted an investigation into referee Mark Clattenburg’s alleged use of a racist slur directed at Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel during an English Premier League game between Chelsea and Manchester United at Stamford Bridge last month. Police said the investigation had been stopped due to a lack of evidence against the 37-year-old referee.
"Inquiries were made and no victims have come forward," a police statement said. "The matter will remain as a recorded incident. Without a victim and/or any evidence that any offence has been committed, the matter cannot currently be investigated. If the situation changes and a victim and/or evidence to support an allegation of a crime comes to police attention, then further inquiries will, if appropriate, be made."
Chelsea lodged an official complaint with the English FA immediately after the game, which Manchester United won, 3-2, in controversial circumstances. The FA has not yet made a decision on the matter after conducting its own investigation. Clattenburg has not refereed an EPL game since, and is not in the roster for this weekend’s games, either.
