Chelsea Chairman Meets with Clattenburg

  • Guardian, Tuesday, November 27, 2012 2:19 PM

Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck met with referee Mark Clattenburg on Monday for the first time since the controversy surrounding the alleged racial slur aimed at John Obi Mikel began nearly a month ago. Last week, the English Football Association dismissed Chelsea’s complaint that midfielder Ramires had overheard the referee call Mikel “a monkey” during the Blues’ 3-2 loss to Manchester United at Stamford Bridge last month.

While Buck met with Clattenburg on Monday at a referees’ training camp, Chelsea has yet to issue a formal apology to the 37-year-old. However, after the FA’s decision last week, Chelsea management indicated that it would have no problem with Clattenburg officiating its games in the future.

Meanwhile, Mikel has now been charged with using threatening or abusive language “in or around the match officials changing room” following the Manchester United game. He faces a minimum ban of three matches if found guilty of wrongdoing.
