UEFA Considers Dumping Europa League

UEFA President Michel Platini revealed on Wednesday that the organization is considering dumping the Europa League altogether, and expanding the more popular -- and more lucrative -- Champions League instead. In an interview with Ouest-France, Platini said UEFA was having an “ongoing debate” about possible changes to its competitions for the 2015-2018 cycle of broadcasting contracts. “We will make a decision in 2014,” he said.

According the Associated Press, the Europa League earns around one-sixth of the Champions League’s $1.73 billion annual revenue, which is mostly shared by the 32 clubs that reach the group stage. However, scrapping the Europa League in favor of a 64-team Champions League would likely be opposed by European Club Association members, which UEFA must consult with on any competition changes.
