Spurs Beat Liverpool; Chelsea Held at Home

Gareth Bale registered a goal, an assist and an own goal on Wednesday as Tottenham defeated Liverpool 2-1 at White Hart Lane. First, the Welshman skipped passed several defenders before his low cross found Aaron Lennon, who tapped home at the far post after seven minutes. Nine minutes later, following a foul on American Clint Dempsey by Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson, Bale fired home an unstoppable swerving free kick to make it 2-0 to the home team. Liverpool improved after halftime, and was rewarded for its pressure when Lennon’s clearance rebounded off Bale’s face to make it 2-1.

Not far away in West London, Chelsea fans were subjected to yet another dour 0-0 draw against Fulham at Stamford Bridge, a point which the Cottagers thoroughly deserved. "I am a little frustrated," Chelsea interim coach Rafael Benitez said after the match. "Overall I think we are watching things that are positive (but) we have to play with a higher tempo for the players that we have up front." Chelsea is now winless in four home games—its worst run in nearly 10 years.

"It is pretty decent to get a point, but I feel we should l have nicked it in the second half," Fulham manager Martin Jol said. "Our shape was good, they had a lot of pressure but we have three or four good chances -- nine times out of 10 we would have broken them."
