[WOMEN’S COLLEGE CUP: Florida State] Florida State returns to the Women’s College Cup for the sixth time in the last decade. The Seminoles, who are stillseeking their first national title, are motivated to put the disappointment of last year’s 3-0 loss to Stanford in the semifinals behind them. What gives Coach MarkKrikorian confidence is that the Seminoles have shown remarkable consistency, particularly in the NCAA Tournament when they beat tough Texas A&M and Notre Dame teams after getting a scareagainst Texas Tech.
THREE STARS:
Tiffany McCarty is Florida State’s all-time leading scorer with 62goals, including six in four games in the 2012 NCAA Tournament. Krikorian says she’ll be a tremendous pro. “Her training is very good, she comes out to get better every day, and I think the resultsspeak for themselves.”
Ines Jaurena, who played for France at the 2008 Under-17 Women’s World Cup and 2010 Under-20 Women’s World Cup, is thelone FSU semifinalist for the 2012 MAC Hermann Trophy. She is one of the top outside backs in the college game.
Dagny Bryjarsdottir, second on theSeminoles with nine goals and nine assists, is a tower of strength in midfield. Commitments with Iceland’s national team limited her to 17 appearances this season.
TACTICS:
The insertion of German freshman Isabella Schmid in the starting midfield has paid dividends in the NCAA Tournament. She startedagainst Texas A&M and had the first goal in a 4-0 rout of the Aggies in the round of 16.
NUMBERS GAME:
FSU’s six College Cupappearances in the last decade are the most of any school in the ACC — more than even North Carolina — and tied for the second most nationally with Notre Dame behind only UCLA with seven.
