Soccer gods teach Shakhtar a painful lesson

[VIDEO PICK: Off the Post] Just two weeks after awful sportsmanship by Luiz Adriano tied Shakhtar Donetsk's game in Copenhagen the Ukrainian team lost at home to Juventus 1-0, on an own goal that should not even have counted, and the top seed in Group E went to the Italian visitors.

We can’t be sure the result in Donetsk will make FC Nordsjaelland players feel better, after its 6-1 loss at Chelsea on Wednesday, but there was no avoiding the sense Shakhtar was being made to pay for Adriano’s shameful goal at FCN.

The striker was suspended by UEFA for his actions, but that obviously wasn’t enough to satisfy the angry soccer gods, who chose to dispense further punishment. Shakhtar only needed a tie to win this group, but it lost the game on a goal that should not have counted.

Stephan Lichtsteiner, who puts in the dangerous cross, is clearly still offside when the ball is played, adding insult to injury, it’s a Ukrainian international, Oleksandr Kucher, who knocks it past his own keeper.
