Portland names new team Thorns FC

[WOMEN'S PRO LEAGUE] Portland's team in the new women's pro league operated by U.S. Soccer will be named by the  Thorns FC to closely connect the club identity to Portland’s familiar standing as the “Rose City” or “City of Roses."

The Thorns FC crest was created by Portland artist Brent Diskin, an ardent local soccer supporter and member of the Timbers Army.

Peregrine Sports, LLC -- the parent company of the MLS Portland Timbers  -- owns the Thorns.

CHICAGO RED STARS. Rory Dames will return as the Red Stars head coach in 2013, and his first assistant will be former Northwestern women's coach Stephanie Foster. Dames’ other assistants will be Christian Lavers and goalkeeper coach Trae Manny.

Let me guess, the fans did not pick that hilarious name? I can see the jokes already on Sportscenter. Maybe that's what they wanted.

Nobody's using the Wiz these days, maybe one of the new clubs can use that again.
