Messi: I Would Swap Ballon d'Or for the World Cup

Reflecting on a record-setting fourth consecutive Ballon d’Or, Lionel Messi said he still has more to win in his career, notably the World Cup with Argentina. The Barcelona striker was quoted by The Sun as saying he would gladly swap the world’s best player award for being crowned world champion with his countrymen.

"Winning the World Cup is what is missing,” Messi said. “The truth is, yes, I would swap a Ballon d'Or for the World Cup, I've always felt like that. Nothing compares with being world champion.”

In a separate interview with France Football, the 25-year-old was asked if he had comprehended his achievements, and whether he deserved another Ballon d’Or. “I do not think about it, all the awards provide me with pleasure and pride,” he said, adding: “I would have been very happy if Andres [Iniesta] had won it. Moreover, without him, without the help of my teammates and coaches, maybe I would not have won. ... I think it is very difficult to assess the merits of each person when it comes to a team sport.”
