Prodigal Son Sahin Returns to Dortmund

Real Madrid has agreed to end Nuri Sahin’s season-long loan deal to English club Liverpool, allowing the Turkish international to return to his former club Borussia Dortmund for the remainder of the season.

Sahin was voted the Bundesliga’s best player at the end of the 2010-2011 season, when he led Dortmund to its first title since 2002. However, the 24-year-old failed to break into Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid the following season, due to a combination of injury and poor form. He was loaned out to Liverpool in August, but failed to make an impression. Now, he has opted to return to Dortmund, which has welcomed him with open arms.

"We emphasised during our title celebrations in 2011 that Nuri Sahin will always remain a very special Borussia Dortmund player and that the door would always be open to him if he ever felt the desire to come back and play for us," Dortmund CEO Aki Watzke said.

"I am happy to be back home,” Sahin said. "I've not come to steal somebody's place. I know things have changed in the 18 months I have been away, but I am here to make my own contribution to Dortmund's future success.''
