Wenger: Arsenal Must Buy Before Transfer Window Closes

Arsene Wenger has warned that Arsenal could miss out on the UEFA Champions League next year if the club doesn’t sign one or two players -- a holding midfielder, a striker, and maybe a goalkeeper -- by the close of the transfer window next Thursday night.

But who is on Wenger's radar? The British press has been linking Arsenal with a move for Barcelona’s want-away striker David Villa for weeks now, but Barca management has repeatedly said the 31-year-old is not for sale. The Telegraph also mentions Atletico Madrid’s Adrian Lopez as another possibility up front, but no other strikers are listed. In midfield, which is the real worry for the Gunners, Wenger is said to mulling a bid for Celtic’s highly rated Victor Wanyama, while West Ham’s Mohamed Diame or Rennes’ Yann M’Vila are other possibilities.

Arsenal is currently sixth in the English Premier League, seven points adrift of fourth-place Tottenham, and four points behind Everton. Wenger still believes Arsenal can qualify for the Champions League, “but we cannot waste any points now,” he said, noting that “last season we came from further behind."
