Galatasaray a 'Step Forward' for Sneijder

Wesley Sneijder shocked the world when he decided to transfer from Inter Milan to Galatasaray a few weeks ago. Last Sunday, the Netherlands captain played 25 minutes in a 2-1 win over fierce rival Besiktas. A few days later, the Turkish giant unveiled another massive signing: former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba would be joining from Shanghai Shenhua.

After the game, SI.com’s Grant Wahl asked Sneijder what the world should expect now from Galatasaray. Could it win the UEFA Champions League? "That might be a little too far," Sneijder said. "But we are still in the Champions League, so the next round will be Schalke, and it will not be easy. We have to go from game to game, but we have a high-quality team, so let's fight for it and see what happens."

Sneijder remarked that Galatasaray, with its ambition of becoming a globally recognized soccer club, represented a “step forward” in his career, whereas a move to the English Premier League didn’t feel like it would have been the same. “If you're going to move to another country, the first feeling is the most important one,” he said. “My feeling was really good with Galatasaray. That's why it wasn't difficult to make the decision in the end."

He added: “And I've played many games in my career so far, but what happened in [Galatasaray’s Turk Telekom Arena on Sunday] was amazing. I can't describe it. You should see it and feel it, because it's different in comparison with all the other teams."
