Spurs' Friedel and Dempsey advance in Europa League

[AMERICANS ABROAD] Brad Friedel started in goal, and Clint Dempsey came on as a substitute as Tottenham tied French club Lyon, 1-1, on the road on Mousa Dembele's goal from 25 yards in the 90th minute and moved into the round of 32 of the Europa League with a 3-2 aggregate win.

The outcome for Tottenham was exactly the same as for the other London club in the Europa League. Chelsea tied Sparta Prague, 1-1, on Eden Hazard's goal in the second minute of stoppage time to give Chelsea a 2-1 aggregate victory.

Friedel and Dempsey are the only Americans left in the Europa League. Steve Cherundolo's Hannover 96 was knocked out by Russia's Anzhi Makhachkala. He is recovering from recent knee surgery and did not suit up.
