  1. This shows you how “behind” we keep getting in the world of soccer…the US spends more money than any other country in the world for the development of men’s players and these are the results we get, in the Men’s national team, the U20 team and now the U17 team…every team we put in the field is a mediocre team at its best, nothing will change in 10, 20, 30 or 100 years, if we keep “importing” English soccer mentality to coach our youth teams. Soccer is learned in the streets, kicking it around with friends, hours and hours must be spent in order to “develop” technique (skills), unfortunately our kids are more interested in playing 1, 2 or 3 different sports, so they don’t “spend” the hours necessary to “develop” as a soccer player. For a country of 330 million plus, the US Men’s national teams will “never” going to achieve success in the world scene and our “awesome” players will never be anything but mediocre compared to players from the rest of the world…no wonder why so many “athletes” decide to play football, basketball, baseball, lacrosse, etc.

  2. You know I am not going to critcize coaches or players on this team. I certainly am not going come down on english football. They play a pretty good game. As for seeing soccer played in the streets here we are a long way from and most likely will never see it as it is known abroad. I think soccer here is a political football with too many people with their hands in the pot and players are being put on these teams to reward certain people, clubs etc. I have been all over this country watching this game and players develop here for more than 50 years and I will say it this way. We are not puting our best players out there. Tell me why. Someone please!

  3. Bob Escobar lives in a fantasy world. Great soccer players in other countries, great basketball players in the US — do not perfect themselves “in the street.” From age 9 or 10, the best ones are already in controlled environments.

  4. Miguel, like who? The greatest player in basketball played H.S. ball, Jordan. To “perfect” themselves, I agree it should be in a “professional” environment but the overall skill, talent, creativity, passion is created, developed throughout childhood, many times in uncontrolled environments. So to perfect something it must already be developed.

  5. Fanfor, I have seen the same. Why would a scout/coach include a small club player for National Inclusion when they can keep Big Clubs happy enough to offer them a position in the near future? I disagree that we dont play on the streets. Just drive by a barrio in Chicago and you will see soccer being played everyday. Do we see basketball being p[layed everyday everywhere in our cities? No, we don’t. But we know where to go if we want to play pickup.

  6. Escobar, It’s not the English style is not good. My question would be what have they shown as far as developing their own players that we should copy or learn from? Especially, when our next door neighbors are doing so well and even finding the time to recruit USA born Mexicans. Just south of them we have several countries that develop the best players in the world. I wonder what style our top player pool are better suited for.

  7. Posters, please ignore Luis – he never played the game and is a daddy coach bent on a 100% Mexican-American USMNT – that is all he wants and he claims bias in everything from ethnicity to areas of the country and even to small clubs (like a US MNT scout would say ‘oh we are not going to pick him because they play at a small club even though they are better than the guy at the big club’……what an idiot…..the real problem is that we have uneducated, divisive people that never played the game spouting advice and influencing our youth.

  8. Hayes, I dont recall signing up for this and there was a directive saying you had to play the game to comment. If Luis wants to comment let him comment its his business. I made the comment that our best players are not out there and I believe that. Whether its small clubs or big clubs something is being missed as I see it. Ask me if I played the game.

  9. Not sure what you signed up for but, as Luis is allowed to make comments, so am I………I don’t care if you played the game but I do care to warn people that want to see our USMNT do well against blatant ethnic divisiveness and race-baiting and lies.

  10. Thats my point everyone is allowed to make comments. You, Luis and me. Only he knows what his intentions are. We have enough racist crap in this country if he is in to that it all comes to the top.

  11. Fanfor, if you continue to post in SA get used to Gordon’s rants that only come right after I or Ric Fonseca post something. He never has anything to contribute to “any” of these blogs. He beleives I am a racist based on what I just posted, pretty much. He wont attack you as much unless you are a Hispanic and opinionated. He wont state anythinmg with logic or common sense. He copy/pastes the same thing every time. He believes our player selection is top notch and that out of 24 million players we have in USA, none are the top athletes we have available because they are picking other sports first. He believes we will never have a chance vs countries like Panama( a country with the population of Connecticut) because their best athletes do in fact pick soccer. P.S. Their most popular sport is baseball & boxing is close. Panama has 200,000 playing soccer.

  12. Gordon, I think what Fanfor is trying to tell you is that he doesn’t need your help to evaluate wether I am a racist or not. He seems intelligent enough to be able to figure that out on his own, don’t you think? You should be careful because he can probably figure you out as well.

  13. Wow, I knew Luis was a pathological liar but this is something! I believe Luis is a racist based on previous comments like “In General, Black People are better Basketball Players, White people are Better Golfers and Hispanics are better Soccer Players in USA.” Further I never said our selection was “top notch” nor that we have none of our top athletes………Fanfor, PLEASE never listen to Luis – he is simply a person of no character or class who lies with every breath he takes.

  14. What did you say about our best athletes? It’s good to see you finally came to your senses on that idiotic idea ” Our best athletes arent picking soccer first”. Different cultures have a particular sport as a way of life. Black people live basketball with a certain passion on a much larger scale than any other ethnicity in Usa. They dominate the NBA and the USA National teams. “IN GENERAL”. I dont think that is a coincidence and think it’s a little naive to think it is. My opinion. many people say we dont play soccer everyday in USA. I know for a fact we do in the barrios and wherever a Hispanic community is present. “IN GENERAL”. I beleive the same cultural passion is seen with Hispanics in soccer as it is seen with black people and basketball in USA. To me that is called common sense. Mexico National teams seem to think we have plenty of “great athletes” and therfore take the time to scout our players even though soccer is the #1 sport over there and is also not a small country. What do you think of this, my dear Gordon?

  15. Gordon, are you also saying our national selection is not top notch? Please specify and state your opinion of our national selection? You were an ODP coach, so you should know. Get away from the hateful copy/paste bullshit for a little.

  16. “I promise” – wow, what a liar, it took all of about a week for poor Luis to break his word again but that is not even a record – he lies much quicker than that – no honor, no class and Fanfor – no matter what he says don’t be fooled – he is a race-baiter and a victim and the true problem behind our youth development – we have uneducated idiots that never played the game teaching our kids – teaching them to lie, to ‘take advantage of the system’, teaching them it is ‘funny’ when the US loses, and basically an all around hatred of the white man and everything American.

  17. Escobar is on track, despite his dislike for the English in his coaching comment. I grew up in England, we played football before school, during recess, at lunch, and after school, every day, many times using a ball made of tinfoil covered with masking tape of some kind if a real ball was not available. You will never see that type of passion in the US,not in near future anyway. There are too many other activities for U.S kids to be involved with on a year round basis.

  18. Peter, have you been to Hispanic communities in USA? Or are you a paid suburbian coach? One of the reasons soccer is so popular in other countries is because it requires little to no cost to play it. You will see poorer countries excel at this sport as their only option many times. You can see this as well in USA in the poor neighborhoods or Barrios. You just have to want to look, you know like the Mexican scouts do. It is so easy for coaches to say ” there is no passion and there will never be” or ” the best athletes are not picking soccer first”. We have 24 million people playing soccer. That is more than any other country in the world. That is more than many of the entire populations of many of the Concacaf countries we are having trouble beating.

  19. Peter – just so you know Luis is race-baiting you – he is saying all US Soccer is racist and never pick Mexican-Americans, And him giving advice about soccer in the US is like Rafa Marquez giving advice about character and sportsmanship.

  20. Gordon…You seem to be confused, the United States is racist, its one of the fundamental issues in the USA. How that plays out on player selection is this…Like chooses like, so Home country centric scouts, coaches and club presidents see the game from a home country bias, one that when you look at the modern game is not successfull, see SScotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England, not a lot of success. ( and dont talk about EPL its a world wide league in terms of players and coaches playing in a rich market )Here is a secret for you Gordon, when you get every elementary school in Georgia or Alabama having every youth in small towns, kicking a soccer ball to school then playing before school, at lunch and then after school on the way home then in the local park till sundown, you will have tons of skilled Black American and white players to out compete the Spanish, Portugese, Dutch, and English speaking Central and South AAmerican immigrant children.Gordon you need to work to spreading the game to rural small town, poor USA towns to create great players. The next Pele is in the Delta, why dont you help reveal him instead of being upset a Luis for wanting the next star of the USMT to have name that is hispanic to show the diversity of soccer in the USA.

  21. Doug, I think you may be confused and misinterpreting pretty much everything I have ever said and making quite a few assumptions. I NEVER said there was not racism in the US. I said Luis is race-baiting and there is no place for that divisiveness. For example, him and his buddy Ric made an issue out of the article talking about five latinos forming a front five for the first time – NOT RACISM but they made it out to be and then Luis goes to his players and tells them look at what the evil white man did – THAT is a problem and if you don’t see that then you are confused…………….As to your other point, I agree – we are losing the battles in the schools but US Soccer is putting their emphasis in the clubs…………As to doing my part in small towns – quite ignorant and insulting – maybe I have done that for over 25 years – maybe I went to a place where football is religion and turned it into a soccer school….what have you done? I won’t disparage you because I don’t know your history like you confusingly have done. Please don’t support racial divide in our youth soccer culture.

  22. We didnt make an issue about it. The articles exact words were ” The all Latino front 5 were on this nite a bust” for the Haiti game. Payul Kennedy wrote that. We didnt understand what purpose that served. I called you out, Gordon because you seem to care very much about racial divisive comments but you saw no fault in that one. Figures. I didnt say it was a racist comment but I did think it was pointless to say and question the motives. I dont know if Mr. Kennedy is white or not. Doug, all of Gordon’s rants towards me started with his statement ” Our best athletes are not picking soccer first in USA” as the popular excuse for losing vs cpountries like Panama. I pointed out that there are in fact an entire culture that do in fact pick soccer first in USA and is a great % of our population. He feels offended and accuses me of racial divide. What an idiot. Gordon, you seem to not appreciate Doug’s assumptions. Are you not doing the same in assuming I tell my players about “the evil white man”?? WHat an idiot. Only Gordon can establish what racial divide is and who is racist. Gordon, after many of your posts it seems most people here disagree with your nonsense or/and completely ignore you. Still can’t take a hint, huh?? Maybe you should take a harder look at yourself and the tone of your assumptions and you racist evaluations. Do you know my history?? I reccomend a psychologist.

  23. Great to see a discussion taking place, at least that means people care.A few years ago we played the Mexican u17s and tied them 2-2, granted we had a few players over 17 but we are also a very small town (they went on to win the world cup at that age level). The Mexican team travels anywhere and everywhere to scout talent and snag Mexican Americans, they come here every few years along the border. I don’t know if the U.S. team is willing to do that, that is, play against anyone and everyone they can while scouting talent across the United States. I think it is a different mentality and perspective. They push to play in various..unfriendly… environments to mentally and physically toughen up their national side.(side note; not every good coach needs to have played the game, Mourinho never played on the big stage and Arigo Sachi ..”“You don’t have to have been a horse to be a jockey.”)

  24. I don’t know about racism in our game, maybe, I personally believe that money is the biggest detriment to our development. Our program has many kids going on to play at the next level (college)but they never get seen or asked to play ODP because of lack of money. While….just across the border in MExico, teams like the new champions Xolos are heavily recruiting kids and even housing/feeding them,,,a true academy system. Throughout Mexico coaches are scouring the cities and leagues for new talent to take to the bigger clubs (and collect a finders fee for ‘training’) and the competitiveness of it is amazing. There really is No high school soccer in Mexico to speak of. The clubs motivation to win and make profit for the club drives the seeking of new talent. They don’t care what color a kid is or how much money his family has,,,Can he play? …is the only question…Shouldn’t it be that way here in America? We are too worried about a kids GPA hahahah and if that kids grades are low he may never play in college, missing his chance to go big and get noticed. In addition, while kids (18-23) are in college they don’t train NEARLY enough as our counterparts in any country. College play puts many of our most talented kids on the back burner for a ….3 month (really?) season. What does anyone else think?

  25. Jamie, excellent points. Academies should pay smaller local clubs a “training fee” that is worth their while. If this is a considerable sum then Academies will be more responsable in who they recruit and for what purpose. This will instantaneously improve scouting, training, opportunities greatly. While many help talent for the love of it at the younger ages it is good for the ones that are better at identifying and developing talent to get compensated so they can continue to do so and not have to deter to other things because of an economic setback.

  26. Can you imagine a commentator saying ” On this night the mostly black team was a bust” ?? when refering to a USA basketball National Team?? Or how about ” On this night the the all black guards were a bust” ?? Let’s see how it sounds in football. “On this night the African American Quarterback was a bust”. ” On this night the all Black coaching staff were a bust”. Now let’s see how it sounds in basketball when refering to white people. “On this night the all White low post was a bust”. What do you think Gordon? If you don’t see anythimng wrong with the “all Hispanic Bust” comment then all of these are ok with you, correct? Let me guess, you will not address this, you will instead rant about my morals.

  27. Good point Luis, a commentator would be fired for making such a reference. With Charter schools being easier and easier to establish, I am shocked that more MLS teams are not creating satelite academies (ex; mini academy schools in far reaching areas across the united states. Under most Charter school regulations the State would pay for all of the educational needs, (which by the way, after nearly 20 years in education, I can see distance learning and online classes replacing almost all staff in such a charter school), and the MLS team would just have to support the athletic side. It is a very small, low risk investment. It would create talent (each team academy has first rights to contact etc.)and a fan base across the united states for each team, as well as spur on local community teams to step up their game. This could grab young talent before they are corrupted by football, basketball in high schools that typically don’t care about soccer programs. I live right on the border and the talent is amazing but there is no investment in the youth in that direction. These don’t have to be huge sprawling facilities, there are so many free and city supported amenities that it could be done very cheaply.I really think Academies are where U.S. soccer needs to place its attention.

  28. They have but in the wrong way. USSF have given Academies full credibility, without first earning it, by only scouting Academy players for National inclusion. The ones that are good enough for National Pool inclusion are first recommended to join an Academy for “better training and more competitive atmosphere”. This would be great if it were entirely true and if there were live proof. For this to happen Acadamies must be held accountable for scouting and developing at the very least.

  29. First, never, ever trust Luis – he is a pathological liar – and never think his quotes are correct – he honestly does not know what they mean or how to use them……..He actually says him and Ric did not make an issue of the comments by Kennedy – here is what Ric wrote…”Kennedy’s statement that the “All Latino front five was, on this night, a bust (sic)” is uncalled for because it wasn’t just them that were the cause for the mediocre play of the entire team, it was every single one of the players that took the field, PLUS the coaching staff and the ones on the bench! A team loses and wins collectively, so why just focus on this “group” of players, Kennedy? Whether they were college players (defenders) or midfielders from the touted “academy pay-for-play” teams, THE WHOLE TEAM STANK TO HIGH HEAVEN AND “WAS, ON THIS NIGHT, A BUST (sic)!!!””………………..and here is what Luis wrote “wish journalists like Paul Kennedy would not make ignorant comments like ” this Latino front Line was a BUST” “

  30. So Luis is an idiot and a race-baiter – pointing out the FACT that there were 5 latinos on the front line for the first time ever for a national team (a part of the quote Luis conveniently left out) is news, IT IS NOT RACISM. Luis’ pathetic attempt to give similar examples demonstrate his ignorance – those are not the same at all – if an NFL team started a black quarterback for the first time ever – an announcer would be foolish not to point that out – you see this is the point – cries of racism where there is none – oh, sorry, Luis isn’t crying racism – he is just crying ignorance (what a joke – he has no courage to say what he really means).

  31. This is Luis….”know how to work this system to my advantage and will do so. Hey, if Usa wont appreciate us then lets keep going to our nother countries. It will be funny to watch this jeep blowing up in teir face.”……………and….”You must admit that white people have not proven to be the most skilled with the the ball in the USA.”………….and…………..”Coach Luis believes and teaches his young players something that has been overlooked in American Soccer : Loyalty, Comradery, Honor.” Go to his racially segregated club website and learn what this idiot is all about at http://www.futbolclubathletico.com. He feels nobody in the US teaches the virtues of loyalty, comradery, or honor and that apparently he is the only one………….And he feels “Very few in USA know much about soccer.”

  32. He would point it out as being the first time a black quarterback has played ( and I think they have) and there is nothing wrong with that as that is news but we would he say ” On this night the black quaerterback was a bust”, you moron?? My comment that you so kindly copy/pasted (yet again) does not call kennedy racist. I beleive the word was ignorant. And yes please go to my website and let me know what you think so Gordon can shut up about it. I strongly feel that loyalty, comradery and honor have been “overlooked” in Us youth soccer “in general” and it has nothing to do with race. The key word here is “In General”. Parents would rather take their Top players to ranked teams than help their small team succeed not taking into account wether their son will continue to develop under this new environment. They are first and foremost chasing a Bigger Name for social status instead of better opportunites for their kids. NO LOYALTY. Since they teach their kids to move on without looking back they are killing the COMRADERY that is a great part of developing. To play for each other and show pride for your team/brothers. If a small club has been responsable for your development you must make sure you are thankful enough and show respect if moving on and make sure the bigger club acknowledges the smaller club’s efforts so that the younger players coming up can see the HONOR that goes with development. Hardly anyone does this so there is little to no HONOR in youth soccer. But please go to my website and form your opinions.

  33. Gordon, do you have a website on info about yourself, so we can see what you are all about?? Or do you just want people to focus on me?? Let’s share the fame brother. This way I can promote you as well.

  34. So if you go to poor victim Luis racially-segregated website you will see he does not mention the words “in general” – yes, he really is that much of a pathological liar but he says those are the key words. His website continually criticizes other clubs and soccer in America even though he never played the game (at all, not like Mourinho) – he bases his ‘expertise’ solely on his ethnicity – his criticisms are unprofessional, classless, and very Marquez-like. He has no clue why all parents go to bigger clubs – maybe they go to them to have their children play against the best competition instead of being trained in the park by an imbecile that NEVER PLAYED THE GAME……..and just so everyone is clear Luis thinks criticizing hispanics while pointing out the first time all 5 front line players were such is racist but supporting a club that cuts white and black players to bring in hispanic players only is not…..Luis loves Chivas……Jamie – interesting point about the Charter schools….Luis would not be in favor of that because it would not lead to a USMNT of 100% Mexican-Americans but I like the thought. There are some high schools that are doing that to some extent now – Shattuck St. Mary’s (MN) for one.

  35. Doesnt matter. It is easily understood that way you moron. I did play but not at a competitive level, stupid. Do you know me?? Do you know Marquez?? Or is your hate just blinded because of our last names?? Yea maybe they do and so they should be improving at a higher rate. Sad to see they are not. Maybe I’m just lucky to have so many players improve drastically in my club. time will tell but so far you are dead wrong, Gordy. LOL. Chivas had it’s own philosophy before being admitted into MLS. MLS knew this but took them in anyway. What do you think of that? I never heard you say anything negative about hiring a German coach that tilts heavily on German born players and even waits for one of them to accept the spot but after he holds out for German team. Gordon, you know there are white and black Hispanics, right?? I am in great favor of Charter Schools. In fact my son might go to one through soccer. How do you like them apples, Gordy?? LOL. I love you man!!

  36. Gordy, so you see nothing wrong on my examples above regarding the the all white or black players?? “No one here agrees with you brother” The Irony.

  37. What makes it funnier is that none of these people here that disagreed with you were Hispanic. Maybe it’s time to take a hint??

  38. Of course, Luis the pathological liar is at it again when he writes I never mentioned the German experiment and I guess according to Luis as long as a league admits a team then it is okay to be racist and cut whites and blacks based on their ethnicity.

  39. No it’s not ok. But if you are going to critisize the team that is honest about theri approach then you should do the same with the league that takes them in. Or else you are just a hypocrite.

  40. Okay, got it, so let’s see Luis played in the barrios when he 7 years old – expert on all things soccer….Luis coaches a rec program in the park – expert and can criticize all things US Soccer and think it is “funny” when the US loses…..Luis has a D license – expert – he can criticize the entirety of US Soccer and their coaching schools……Luis reads articles about MLS, was never at the opening meetings with MLS and Chivas – expert – knows full well MLS is compliant in a club choosing to racially-segregate itself……….Got it.

  41. So when someone criticizes Marquez, a hispanic, Luis has to jump in, cry and criticize Beckham. When someone criticize Chivas, Luis cries and has to have something else criticized…hmmm….I think I solved the US problem- no more uneducated coaches that hate America that never played the game…maybe I have solved this one as well…Luis can’t stand when one group of people gets criticized and immediately defends them and then points out that a white guy or a bunch of white should share in the blame as well…..hmmm…..what do they call that? Immature, child-like, like a spoiled little brat, a victim? Yes, all of those but what is the best way to define that? When a white guy gets criticized I don’t see Luis jump to defend him and point out that a hispanic should get blamed as well – that would mean Luis is fair and unbiased and unfettered by racial and ethnic divide….no, I don’t ever see that? So, what is it when a person only performs an action when one race or ethnicity gets criticized just like all races do? I got it………race-baiting…..two problems solved!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  42. Ok got it. So what makes you the expert to critisize me, Chivas, Marquez, Ric, the Hispanic player “in general” ???

  43. I can take critisism as much as the next man. Can you?? When in fact Mr. Kennedy, chooses to critisize or highlight an “All White” Front Line or Back Line, I will defend them as well. No problem. Haven’t read that yet on these columns, though.

  44. Luis, the defender of all, the saint to every race! But “I am now a Chivas USA fan.” So all you need is a basic education and understanding of the English language that Luis supports cutting white and black layers based on their ethnicity.

  45. I think it is great that Chivas will focus on giving more Hispanics opportunities at the pro level in USA. Too manygood Hispanic players dont have the opportunity to play college soccer in USA. Chivas in Mexico is playing U17/U18 players on the 1st teams. That is the vision that the MLS needs even though focusing on one ethnicity is not ideal, they will contribute new better ideas to the league. DONT YPOU AGREE, SENOR GORDON C.?

  46. Again, let me say this slower. I didnt say it was racist. I said it was ignorant. Comprende?? If I’m racist for liking Chivas the your as racist for not seeing how ignorant that comment was. There, we are even. Adois

  47. What does that have to do with SA writers comment? Yes, O do believe racism is very much alive in soccer in the USA. Did I studder? Or did I answer with another question or rant?

  48. SA is at fault as well. They are as or more ignorant than the writers they hire. Just like in any organization, college grad. The company is responsable for their employees. You see how easy that was, Stupid??

  49. Yes I am because they will develop and expose untapped talent, stupid. How about highlighting what the U17 front five’ nationality or back five. They got blown out vs Mexico and tied Panama. What do you think Gordy??
