[PANAMA CITY TRIANGULAR] The U.S. under-17 men’s national team fell to Mexico’s U-17s, 4-0, on Saturday in its first game on its a week-long trip toPanama City, Panama. The U-17s will play three games while in Panama City, site of the 2013 Concacaf U-17 Championship April 6-19.
Marco Granadoshad two goals and Jose Almanza and Alejandro Diaz also scored for the Tri, the defending champion in the Under-17 WorldCup.
U.S. coach Richie Williams named a 20-player travel roster for a week-long trip to Panama City, Panama, that began Thursday. Nineteen of the20 players on the travel roster are part of the U.S. U-17 Residency Program in Bradenton, Fla. Midfielder Cameron Lindley joined the team for the trip.
Crew Soccer Academy leads all teams with three players on the trip. The New York Red Bulls and Chivas USA have two.
The USA faces the Panama U-17s Tuesday before rounding out thetrip on Thursday against the under-20 team from local club Arabe Unido.

This shows you how “behind” we keep getting in the world of soccer…the US spends more money than any other country in the world for the development of men’s players and these are the results we get, in the Men’s national team, the U20 team and now the U17 team…every team we put in the field is a mediocre team at its best, nothing will change in 10, 20, 30 or 100 years, if we keep “importing” English soccer mentality to coach our youth teams. Soccer is learned in the streets, kicking it around with friends, hours and hours must be spent in order to “develop” technique (skills), unfortunately our kids are more interested in playing 1, 2 or 3 different sports, so they don’t “spend” the hours necessary to “develop” as a soccer player. For a country of 330 million plus, the US Men’s national teams will “never” going to achieve success in the world scene and our “awesome” players will never be anything but mediocre compared to players from the rest of the world…no wonder why so many “athletes” decide to play football, basketball, baseball, lacrosse, etc.
You know I am not going to critcize coaches or players on this team. I certainly am not going come down on english football. They play a pretty good game. As for seeing soccer played in the streets here we are a long way from and most likely will never see it as it is known abroad. I think soccer here is a political football with too many people with their hands in the pot and players are being put on these teams to reward certain people, clubs etc. I have been all over this country watching this game and players develop here for more than 50 years and I will say it this way. We are not puting our best players out there. Tell me why. Someone please!
Bob Escobar lives in a fantasy world. Great soccer players in other countries, great basketball players in the US — do not perfect themselves “in the street.” From age 9 or 10, the best ones are already in controlled environments.
Miguel, like who? The greatest player in basketball played H.S. ball, Jordan. To “perfect” themselves, I agree it should be in a “professional” environment but the overall skill, talent, creativity, passion is created, developed throughout childhood, many times in uncontrolled environments. So to perfect something it must already be developed.
Fanfor, I have seen the same. Why would a scout/coach include a small club player for National Inclusion when they can keep Big Clubs happy enough to offer them a position in the near future? I disagree that we dont play on the streets. Just drive by a barrio in Chicago and you will see soccer being played everyday. Do we see basketball being p[layed everyday everywhere in our cities? No, we don’t. But we know where to go if we want to play pickup.
Escobar, It’s not the English style is not good. My question would be what have they shown as far as developing their own players that we should copy or learn from? Especially, when our next door neighbors are doing so well and even finding the time to recruit USA born Mexicans. Just south of them we have several countries that develop the best players in the world. I wonder what style our top player pool are better suited for.

I grew up in England, we played football before school, during recess, at lunch, and after school, every day, many times using a ball made of tinfoil covered with masking tape of some kind if a real ball was not available. You will never see that type of passion in the US,not in near future anyway. There are too many other activities for U.S kids to be involved with on a year round basis.
Peter, have you been to Hispanic communities in USA? Or are you a paid suburbian coach? One of the reasons soccer is so popular in other countries is because it requires little to no cost to play it. You will see poorer countries excel at this sport as their only option many times. You can see this as well in USA in the poor neighborhoods or Barrios. You just have to want to look, you know like the Mexican scouts do. It is so easy for coaches to say ” there is no passion and there will never be” or ” the best athletes are not picking soccer first”. We have 24 million people playing soccer. That is more than any other country in the world. That is more than many of the entire populations of many of the Concacaf countries we are having trouble beating.

How that plays out on player selection is this…Like chooses like, so Home country centric scouts, coaches and club presidents see the game from a home country bias, one that when you look at the modern game is not successfull, see SScotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England, not a lot of success. Great to see a discussion taking place, at least that means people care.A few years ago we played the Mexican u17s and tied them 2-2, granted we had a few players over 17 but we are also a very small town (they went on to win the world cup at that age level). The Mexican team travels anywhere and everywhere to scout talent and snag Mexican Americans, they come here every few years along the border. I don’t know if the U.S. team is willing to do that, that is, play against anyone and everyone they can while scouting talent across the United States. I think it is a different mentality and perspective.They push to play in various..unfriendly… environments to mentally and physically toughen up their national side.(side note; not every good coach needs to have played the game, Mourinho never played on the big stage and Arigo Sachi ..”“You don’t have to have been a horse to be a jockey.”)
I don’t know about racism in our game, maybe, I personally believe that money is the biggest detriment to our development. Our program has many kids going on to play at the next level (college)but they never get seen or asked to play ODP because of lack of money. While….just across the border in MExico, teams like the new champions Xolos are heavily recruiting kids and even housing/feeding them,,,a true academy system. Throughout Mexico coaches are scouring the cities and leagues for new talent to take to the bigger clubs (and collect a finders fee for ‘training’) and the competitiveness of it is amazing. There really is No high school soccer in Mexico to speak of. The clubs motivation to win and make profit for the club drives the seeking of new talent. They don’t care what color a kid is or how much money his family has,,,Can he play? …is the only question…Shouldn’t it be that way here in America?We are too worried about a kids GPA hahahah and if that kids grades are low he may never play in college, missing his chance to go big and get noticed. In addition, while kids (18-23) are in college they don’t train NEARLY enough as our counterparts in any country. College play puts many of our most talented kids on the back burner for a ….3 month (really?) season.What does anyone else think?
Jamie, excellent points. Academies should pay smaller local clubs a “training fee” that is worth their while. If this is a considerable sum then Academies will be more responsable in who they recruit and for what purpose. This will instantaneously improve scouting, training, opportunities greatly. While many help talent for the love of it at the younger ages it is good for the ones that are better at identifying and developing talent to get compensated so they can continue to do so and not have to deter to other things because of an economic setback.

Good point Luis, a commentator would be fired for making such a reference.With Charter schools being easier and easier to establish, I am shocked that more MLS teams are not creating satelite academies (ex; mini academy schools in far reaching areas across the united states. Under most Charter school regulations the State would pay for all of the educational needs, (which by the way, after nearly 20 years in education, I can see distance learning and online classes replacing almost all staff in such a charter school), and the MLS team would just have to support the athletic side. It is a very small, low risk investment. It would create talent (each team academy has first rights to contact etc.)and a fan base across the united states for each team, as well as spur on local community teams to step up their game. This could grab young talent before they are corrupted by football, basketball in high schools that typically don’t care about soccer programs. I live right on the border and the talent is amazing but there is no investment in the youth in that direction. These don’t have to be huge sprawling facilities, there are so many free and city supported amenities that it could be done very cheaply.I really think Academies are where U.S. soccer needs to place its attention.
They have but in the wrong way. USSF have given Academies full credibility, without first earning it, by only scouting Academy players for National inclusion. The ones that are good enough for National Pool inclusion are first recommended to join an Academy for “better training and more competitive atmosphere”. This would be great if it were entirely true and if there were live proof. For this to happen Acadamies must be held accountable for scouting and developing at the very least.
