[MLS SPOTLIGHT] Who needs Landon Donovan when you have Mike Magee? On a
day that began when LA Galaxy players were handed their 2012 championship rings, Magee, best known for his playoff heroics, stole the show with the first three goals -- his first MLS hat trick -- in
the 4-0 win over his hometown Chicago Fire. The three goals weren't just any ordinary goals, and they earned him the applause of his teammates when he returned to the locker room after the game.
“It was cool,” Magee said of the postgame reception.
In the absence of Donovan, who has been traveling in Cambodia, Magee was moved up front alongside Robbie Keane from
his usual position in the left side of midfield.
Chicago keeper Sean Johnson had kept the Fire in the game until the 38th minute when Magee
side-volleyed Todd Dunivant's deflected cross past Johnson.
On the second goal, Robbie Keane fed Magee, who
froze defender Gonzalo Segares on the right side of the area and fired a left-footed shot to the far post.
Magee's third goal was the closest to
being considered a garbage, but he took a rebound, drifted across the area and once again fired a volley past Johnson.
“The hat trick was cool," Magee added. The win was cool, and
the best part of the day was getting the rings. It was a helluva day.”
Magee's three goals:
great guy; turned pro at 15; loved him as a metrostar/red bull. Congrats.
Always liked Magee's technical skills and passion on the pitch...he was in a zone and made things happen.
Why bring Donovan into the discussion, he's absent period, end of story.
