Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes, whose team is coasting toward the Bundesliga title this season, has hit out at the club’s management after he found out about an honorary boardroom appointment through the media. Heynckes then rejected the offer.

In an interview with Abendzeitung Munich, chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge revealed that Bayern wanted to keep the retiring Heynckes at the club beyond the summer, when Pep Guardiola will take over for him. "Jupp Heynckes does a fantastic job here. He is one of the great coaches in Europe," Rummenigge said. "We have offered him a chance to be part of FC Bayern in the future. We'd like some competent soccer opinion on our advisory board."

However, ahead of Bayern’s clash with Fortuna Dusseldorf, Heynckes claimed he had not been contacted by Bayern about a future role on its board. He went on to tell one TV station that he was not interested. "Even more so, when I only hear about it from the media," Heynckes said. In a later interview, Rummenigge insisted that the offer was meant as a thank you for his efforts at the club.

Abendzeitung suggested that Heynckes might be more annoyed by all the hoopla surrounding Guardiola’s appointment than he has let on, prompting the sensitive reaction.
