Palermo's Manager Merry-Go-Round

Serie A’s last-placed club, Palermo, has made its fifth coaching appointment of the season, as Giuseppe Sannino replaces Gian Piero Gasperini. Perhaps even stranger is the fact that both Sannino and Gasperini have already been in charge of the club this season—with the latter having been fired now twice this year.

Sannino started the season in September as head coach at Palermo but was fired after just three games in charge. His replacement, Gasperini, lasted until February 4, when Alberto Malesani stepped in, only to be replaced 19 days later by Gasperini again. However, following a draw at Torino and a loss at home to Siena, the former Inter Milan coach was fired for the second time this year.

Palermo is currently just five points from safety against relegation with 10 games to go, but nevertheless, President Maurizio Zamparani, isn’t holding onto much hope that his team will stay in Italy’s top league. "We won't be able to save ourselves now,” he told the Corriere dello Sport on Monday. “It's folly to think we can do it. We would need a lot of luck and for our players to act as if they're men rather than baby food. I don't know what they are made of. I'm not giving up, but the maths reads otherwise.”
