April tests increase competition in team

[USA WOMEN] Tom Sermanni called in 20 of the 23 players from the 2013 Algarve Cup championship team for the U.S. women's national team's matches against Germany April 5 in Offenbach and the Netherlands four days later in The Hague. The only players missing are Jill Loyden and Carli Lloyd, both injured at the Algarve Cup, and teenager Lindsey Horan, who will remain with her French club, Paris St. Germain.

Sermanni named uncapped Western New York Flash rookie goalkeeper Adrianna Franch to the roster. In addition, Julie Johnston, the captain of the USA's 2012 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup championship team, returns to the roster after earning her first career cap against Scotland on Feb. 9, and Meghan Klingenberg, who is currently playing with Tyreso in Sweden, has sufficiently recovered from shoulder surgery and gets her first call-up of the year.

"We got the chance to play everyone on the roster at the Algarve Cup, and to see the young players step up and play well alongside the more experienced veterans was a positive step in the continued growth of the team," said Sermanni in a statement. "These matches present two more excellent opportunities to increase the competition on the squad and for players to show they can perform in difficult environments. Any time you can play two European teams in their own countries it makes for the best games for the coaching staff to assess and evaluate where we are as a team."
