Monterrey shows its mettle

[CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE] Santos could not take advantage of a red card to Argentina Cesar Delgado for a foul on Herculez Gomez and had to settle for a 0-0 tie with two-time defending champion Monterrey in the first leg of their rematch in the Concacaf Champions League final before a packed house at the Estadio Corona. Visiting Monterrey was the better team throughout and unlucky not to score.

Monterrey's best chance came when Chilean Humberto Suazo hit the post, but Suazo and Delgado were both denied by Santos keeper Oswaldo Sanchez.

Gomez came on in the second half for Santos, which lost to Monterrey 3-2 in last year's final.

The second leg will take place Wednesday at Monterrey’s Estadio Tecnologico.
