Report: Lampard Offered Chelsea Extension

Frank Lampard, who has been repeatedly linked with a move to the Los Angeles Galaxy at the end of the current season, now looks set to be offered the one-year contract extension that he always favored, the Independent reports. However, no announcement will be made until after the club’s new coach has been appointed.

This would constitute a U-turn from Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, who seemed set on allowing Lampard to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season, when he will turn 35. However, Jose Mourinho’s likely return to the London club may have played a factor in a new deal for the Chelsea legend.

The Independent claims the LA Galaxy deal for Lampard fell through when Tim Lieweke, the former president and CEO of LA owner AEG, left the company in March.

If Lampard stays, he is virtually guaranteed of surpassing Bobby Tambling’s club record of 202 goals; Lampard is currently just one goal shy of tying Tambling’s record.
