MLS Business Summit headed to Columbus

By Paul Kennedy

Major League Soccer will host a business summit in Columbus, Ohio, around the USA-Mexico World Cup 2014 qualifier on Sept. 10.

MLS commissioner Don Garber, who was in Columbus on Wednesday to announce the summit along with Crew president Marc McCullers, said that MLS expected about 250-300 people to attend the midweek event, which will be held Sept. 10-12. The event was also held in Columbus in 2012.

“We’ll go through all of our business agenda items,” Garber said. “How do we continue to grow out league, how do we share best practices, how do we get in front of all the exciting trends that are taking place in the sports marketing and media industry, particularly focused in digital media and social media.”

SPIRIT DEBUTS NEW JERSEY. The NWSL's Washington Spirit played its first game Saturday with team sponsor ProChain Solutions' logo on the team jersey.

Spirit owner Bill Lynch is co-founder of the Washington-based software company. All NWSL teams except Chicago have jersey sponsor deals. Other NWSL sponsors:

Sky Blue FC: 2ND FLOOR Youth Helpline
Portland Thorns FC: Providence Health & Services
FC Kansas City: Title Boxing Company
Boston Breakers: Ocean Spray
Western New York Flash: Sahlen Packing Co.
Seattle Reign FC: Moda Health

SPOTLIGHT ON CROCKETTEERS. The Crocketteers, the NASL San Antonio Scorpions’ supporters group, has entered into an agreement with BeIN Sport USA, which will produce and air six one-hour episodes of “Inside the Garrison” chronicling the group’s activities.

“As the fastest growing soccer supporters’ group in the world, we always knew this would be a part of our future history,” said Crocketteers president James Hope. “This show will provide a template for all other soccer groups everywhere in the world and show them exactly how they can duplicate our success.”

Time Warner Cable will also air the show on its local Sports Channel in each TWC market.
