Real Cancels Press Conference Amid Controversy

Real Madrid on Friday canceled its Friday press conference -- presumably to avoid further controversy -- ahead of Saturday’s trip to Espanyol. Aside from suggesting recently that he will depart the club this summer, Coach Jose Mourinho has hit out at captain Iker Casillas and defender Pepe in recent press conferences. La Liga does not require clubs to hold press conferences, and this is not the first time that Real officials have decided to cancel one. The press is speculating that the club does not want to stir up any more controversy with one eye on next Friday’s Copa del Rey final against Atletico Madrid.

Meanwhile, Mourinho’s standing among Madridistas (Real Madrid fans), is deteriorating quickly. On Wednesday, the Portuguese was booed when his name was announced prior to Real’s 6-2 home win against Malaga. On Thursday, former player Michel summed up the club’s feelings in an interview with Marca: "Whether you like him or not, Mourinho has always acted in the same way to win all of his trophies. Maybe we used to be amused by him, but not any more.”

Michel was also quick to defend club legend Casillas, who has fallen out with Mourinho. "There are people in Madrid who are untouchable because they have earned it," he said. "Then it is the coach's decision. Diego Lopez is outstanding, but Iker Casillas is the best goalkeeper in the world, without any doubt - that is my opinion."
