Roma Fined for Racist Chanting

AS Roma was fined $65,000 after its supporters were found guilty of racially abusing AC Milan players Mario Balotelli and Kevin-Prince Boateng during the 0-0 draw at the San Siro on Sunday. The chanting got so bad that at one point the officials had to stop the match, with Roma captain Francesco Totti urging them to stop.

Shortly after the incident, Roma released the following statement condemning the fans’ actions: “AS Roma condemns any form of racial abuse. This type of behavior from any football supporters, including ours, is completely unacceptable. We are committed to facing this issue head-on to rid our sport of this problem and promote respect for all.”

The 0-0 draw kept AC Milan in third-place in the Serie A table with 69 points, but its lead over fourth-place Fiorentina fell to just two points. That means Milan needs to win away to already relegated-Siena on Saturday to be sure of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
