Updated version of Galeano classic goes on sale

[E-BOOK] Uruguayan author Eduardo Galeano often criticizes how the modern world has distorted his favorite sport, yet technology has brought his work into a new medium.

A revised and updated version of Soccer in Sun and Shadow, which was first published in 1995, has been released as an e-book from Byliner. It is available for $9.99 at the Kindle Store at Amazon, at Apple’s iBookstore, at BarnesAndNoble.com, and at Kobo. A print version will be released during the summer.

This English-language version is translated as before by Mark Reid. Composed of colorful, insightful vignettes, some as short as a single paragraph, Soccer in Sun and Shadow vividly paints Galeano’s impressions as a fan, an artist, and a critic. Great players, famous matches, and world figures are woven into historical tidbits, poignant anecdotes, and personal moments.

Though swayed by his nation’s tradition and pride in the game, he seeks its beauty and truth regardless of source.

“[I am] a beggar for good soccer,” writes Galeano, who grew up in Uruguay – as do all young boys – aspiring to play professionally. “I go about the world, hand outstretched, and in the stadiums I plead: ‘A pretty move, for the love of God.’”

Galeano is the author of the three-volume Memory of Fire, as well as Open Veins of Latin America, Mirrors and other books that have been translated into 30 languages. He is the recipient of the Lannan Prize for Cultural Freedom, American Book Award, Casa de las Américas Prize and First Distinguished Citizen of the region by the countries of Mercosur.

Byliner publishes original fiction and nonfiction by noted authors. Fever Pitch author Nick Hornby is on its roster. Selections and subscription information are available at byliner.com.

Great news! Nothing compares to Galeano's original Spanish version, of course, but this is a great read no matter what other language.
