Report: Holden Gets Bolton Extension

U.S. international Stuart Holden has agreed to a new one-year deal with current club Bolton Wanderers, according to ESPN. Holden, who is currently preparing for the USA’s upcoming friendlies against Belgium and Germany, will sign the contract when he returns to England after the series of summer internationals that includes World Cup qualifiers as well as the Concacaf Gold Cup.

The one-year deal is something of a surprise given that Holden made just four appearances for Bolton last season, all as a substitute, while starting four games on loan at Sheffield Wednesday. The 27-year-old’s current deal expires this summer.

Holden joined Bolton in January 2010 from the Houston Dynamo in MLS and quickly became a regular starter. However, in March 2011, he suffered a cruciate knee injury that restricted him to just one first-team appearance in 22 months. Holden became a bit-part player thereafter as Bolton worried about his recovery.
