Seattle Reign FC has Hope but still winless

[NWSL REWIND: Week 8] Canadian Christine Sinclair faced Hope Solo for the first time she scored three goals against the U.S. keeper in the epic 2012 Olympic semifinal match, and she converted a penalty kick in the 84th minute as Portland Thorns FC beat winless Seattle Reign FC, 1-0 to remain even with Sky Blue FC for first place. The game was Hope's first in the NWSL after recovering from wrist surgery.

Hope and her teammates and coaches were livid with the decision to award the penalty for a foul on Thorns star Alex Morgan. "The referees are a joke," Reign FC coach Laura Harvey told SoccerWire.com.

The game drew 3,324 fans at Starfire Sports Complex -- the largest crowd of the season for the Reign, which has one point in eight games.

-- Canadian Sophie Schmidt's penalty kick in the 22nd minute was the difference as Sky Blue FC beat FC Kansas City, 1-0, to win its fourth straight game. Kansas City played with 10 players after Lauren Sesselmann, another Canadian, was red carded on the play that led to the penalty kick. The game attracted 4,186 fans at Verizon Wireless Field, its home at Shawnee Mission North High School.

-- Englishwoman  Lianne Sanderson sets up all goals by Heather O'Reilly, Katie Schoepfer and Kyah Simon to lead the Boston Breakers to a 3-0 win over the Washington Spirit, their first shutout in six games. The game drew just 1,246 fans on a cold and rainy night in Somerville.

Friday ...

-- Defender Brittany Taylor assisted on goals by Abby Wambach and captain McCall Zerboni as the Western New York Flash rallied from a goal down to pick up its third straight win, a 2-1 victory over the winless Chicago Red Stars, in front of 3,152 fans at Sahlen’s Stadium.
