Di Vaio and McInerney on target in 5-3 goalfest won by Impact

[MLS REWIND: Week 13] Marco Di Vaio and Jack McInerney are tied for the MLS lead in goals with nine apiece after Di Vaio’s hat trick led Montreal past Philadelphia, 5-3.

Di Vaio scored the Impact’s first three goals as it ran up a 3-1 lead, and after Antoine Hoppenot reduced the deficit to 3-2, Andrew Wenger and Blake Smith tacked on two more. Jack Mack had the first Union goal in the fifth minute, three minutes after Di Vaio started the fireworks at Stade Saputo.

With the victory, Montreal (7-2-2, 23 points) won its third straight game and moved to within one point of Eastern Conference leader New York, which has played three more games and hosts Columbus Sunday. Di Vaio joins Mike Magee, who was traded by the LA Galaxy to the Chicago Fire for Robbie Rogers, as the only players to hit hat tricks so far this season.

TIMBERS TOPPLE D.C. Portland is unbeaten in 11 games, of which it has won five, by virtue of a 2-0 defeat of D.C. United at RFK Stadium. Several missing starters forced head coach Caleb Porter to abandon his 4-3-3 formation and play a regular 4-4-2, and his players responded.

Rodney Wallace marked another fine performance with the game’s first goal and Darlington Nagbe’s fourth of the season salted away another road result for the Timbers. The league’s only unbeaten away team is 2-0-5.

YOUNG GUNS STRIKE FOR REVS. Diego Fagundez scored in his third straight game as New England won its second straight game by downing Toronto FC, 2-0. Also netting was Juan Agudelo, who is flourishing since leaving the West Coast for the East thanks to a trade from Chivas USA.

RAPIDS’ ROOKIE ROLLS. Deshorn Brown strengthened his case for Rookie of the Year honors by assisting on both goals of Colorado’s 2-0 victory over Chivas USA. Goals by Atiba Harris and Nathan Sturgis were complemented by the goalkeeping of Clint Irwin, who posted a fifth MLS shutout in his 11th league match.
