Edu, Ashe and Shea out

[USA-BELGIUM] The USA will be short-handed for Wednesday's friendly against Belgium in Cleveland. Maurice Edu and Corey Ashe withdrew because of injuries, while Brek Shea headed to Dallas for treatment on his right calf strain. Five other players are unavailable because of recent or ongoing club commitments, leaving Jurgen Klinsmann with just 18 field players for the game.

Ashe, a late call-up for the Belgium game, suffered a groin strain in the Houston Dynamo’s 1-1 tie with Sporting Kansas City on Sunday.

Edu, who played only two games for Bursaspor since starting in the USA's 0-0 tie with Mexico in March, has been diagnosed with a sports hernia. Stoke City's medical staff made the diagnosis.

Edgar Castillo and Joe Corona are with Tijuana, which plays at Atletico Mineiro Wednesday in the Copa Libertadores. Fabian Johnson started for Hoffenheim in Monday's 2-1 win over Kaiserslautern that gave it a 5-2 aggregate win in their German promotion/relegation playoff, while Michael Bradley played for Roma in its 1-0 loss to Lazio in the Coppa Italia final on Sunday. Danny Williams, who has not played for Hoffenheim since March, is also not listed on the U.S. roster for the Belgium game.

Belgium has been training in New Jersey at Rutgers University since Friday. Jan Vertonghen and Moussa Dembele joined the team after playing for Tottenham against Jamaica in the Bahamas, while captain Vincent Kompany and Eden Hazard arrived following the Manchester City-Chelsea game at Yankee Stadium.

Kompany, who started for Man City, is expected to sit out Wednesday's game with a slight knee injury. Hazard, who has been injured and did not play for Chelsea, turned around and headed to Belgium for treatment. The Red Devils have a key World Cup qualifier against Serbia next month.

Nicolas Lombaerts and Axel Witsel (Zenit St. Petersburg) and Nacer Chadli (TC Twente) also headed home after finishing their club seasons this weekend.

Backup keeper Koen Casteels had withdrawn from the team because of Hoffenheim's playoff series.

Christian Benteke, who is coming off a sensational first season at Aston Villa, could sit out Wednesday's game with a minor injury, giving Romelu Lukaku (on loan to West Bromwich from Chelsea) a chance up front.

Is it just me or does bringing in several players who either have not played in ages, say Parkhurst, or are questionably fit, Shea, Williams and now Ashe and Edu... and deciding NOT to bring in Gatt, Donovan, Torres, Lichaj, Diskerud etc. ... yet when in doubt, bring in Evans, Ashe (now out), Davis... are we actually getting our best ready to play in a trio of vital World Cup Qualifiers or just throwing S**t against a wall to see if anything sticks ... this ISN'T what I want to see and while I still expect to see the US qualify, I'm less and less impressed by the selection process to making the squad, and while at least Beckerman is amongst the missing... so are nearly all the flank players of note... this isn't what I had hoped to see after last year. ...
