D.C. academy keeper Ammann joins Watford

[AMERICANS ABROAD] Another MLS academy is leaving to join a foreign club. Goalie Arie Ammann signed with Watford's youth academy, the English club's first signing of the summer. He follows in the footsteps of his father, Mike Ammann, one of the first American keepers to play in England.

Arie is eligible to work in England because he holds a Swiss passport, through his father, who played two years in England with Charlton Athletic and then spent six seasons in MLS with Kansas City, the MetroStars and D.C. United.

    not MLS academy...

McLean Academy goalkeeper, Arie Ammann, has been selected to play goalkeeper on a Select team at the 2011 U.S. Soccer Development Academy Winter Showcase in Florida.
“Arie has a progressed an awful lot in the 13 months he has been with McLean Academy.  As a 15 year old, he earned the tremendous opportunity to play in front of nearly every national scout, and many, many college coaches. His development is a tribute to his own work rate and professionalism, the environment created by our staff and players, and the efforts of the entire Northern Virginia soccer community,” said Mike Madigan, McLean Academy U15/U16 Coach.
Arie added, “"Playing with the top players in the country was a great experience. I really enjoyed playing in that atmosphere in front of all those college coaches and scouts. It was great having my Dad and McLean teammates there to support me. I hope I get the chance to do it again."
The McLean Academy is the only program in northern Virginia to provide local elite athletes the opportunity to compete with the top players in nation, as well as a platform for other opportunities as evidenced by the recent honor for Arie.
