[MLS REWIND: Week 15] Columbus kept MLS leading scorer Jack McInerney
off the scoresheet, but three of his Union teammates hit the net in a 3-0 Philly win Wednesday at PPL Park. Sebastien Le Toux moved into the MLS assist lead by setting up goals by
Sheanon Williams and Conor Casey after Brian Carroll opened the scoring in the 25th minute.
Carroll intercepted a clearing pass and took
a shot that deflected into the net off Crew defender Eric Gehrig.
Philly got its second and third goals, giving them three within six minutes, by attacking the near post.
Carroll got his head to a Le Toux corner kick and flicked it to the back post, where Williams stuffed it into the net from point-blank range. Casey scored on a diving header two minutes later by
diving to meet Le Toux’s cross and drilling it past Crew keeper Andy Gruenebaum. Le Toux now has six assists.
Zac MacMath secured his fourth shutout
of the season with saves on on Aaron Schoenfeld and Federico Higuain in the final minutes.
The win lifted Philadelphia (6-5-4) into a three-way tie for
third place in the Eastern Conference. The Crew (4-5-5) is seventh. Both teams take a break from league action but play in the Open Cup next week. Philly plays D.C. United and the Crew plays Chicago
on Wednesday.
