Wambach shatters world scoring record

[USA-SOUTH KOREA] Abby Wambach scored four goals in the first half of the USA's international friendly with South Korea at Red Bull Arena to shatter the world record of 158 goals held by Mia Hamm. Wambach's four goals give her 160 in her career for the USA, which went on to win, 5-0, in a game that drew almost 19,000 fans.

Wambach's family was on hand at Red Bull Arena -- brought in by former MagicJack owner Dan Borislow -- for the final U.S. match of the summer and Hamm's record in sight.

Wambach scored on assists from Lauren Cheney in the 11th and 20th minutes to tie Hamm's record and broke it with her third goal set up by Megan Rapinoe in the 31st minute. She added a fourth goal, sliding in to put away a cross from Alex Morgan, in stoppage time.

“It’s special," said Wambach, "not only because I could tell my teammates were trying to get me those goals in the first half, but my family was here, it was a great crowd, and a great team performance. I can’t say how much I look up to Mia and how amazing the record that she set was. My teammates have put me in all different kinds of positions to score goals, and I can’t say it enough, and I really through and through believe it in my heart that I’m only as good as my teammates allow me to be. And yes, I score a lot of goals, and yes, I put myself in position to score goals, but they do, too. I can’t thank my teammates enough. It’s a special night.”

Cheney added the final goal as the USA extended its unbeaten streak to 34 games dating back to March 2012. The second of the two-game series with South Korea was no contest as the USA held a 25-2 advantage in shots.
