[MLS REWIND: Week 17] Portland joined Real Salt Lake as the overall points leaders in
MLS by topping Colorado, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Jeld-Wen Field. Rodney Wallace assisted on each goal and Will Johnson
and Frederic Piquionne each registered a goal and an assist to lift the Timbers (8-1-9, 30 points) into a first-place tie atop the Western Conference with Real
Salt Lake (9-5-3), which had beaten the Seattle Sounders, 2-0, on Saturday. Portland stretched its unbeaten record to 15 games and posted its seventh straight shutout at home in league play.
A quickly taken free kick by Johnson slipped the ball out wide left to Wallace, whose chip into the goalmouth was headed home by Piquionne in the 12th minute. Johnson scored his team-high sixth
goal of the season by running onto a ball from Wallace, flicking it up into the air, and banging it home just before halftime. Substitute Ryan Johnson got the
third goal created by crisp first touches from another sub, Ben Zemanski, and Wallace.
CASEY
CLIPS RED BULLS. Amid all the attention focused on young Union striker Jack McInerney, who is tied for the league lead in goals with 10, Conor Casey has steadily and solidly toiled away up top as well. Casey scored twice to up his season’s tally to five goals in a 3-0 Philly defeat of New York,
which lost Lloyd Sam to a red card in the 28th minute.
Sam plowed into Danny Cruz with a two-footed,
studs-up tackle, and playing 10 against 11 the already-shorthanded Red Bulls -- Tim Cahill was injured; Juninho and
Jamison Olave were suspended – couldn’t muster much resistance. Casey scored in the seventh minute shortly after a goal of his was disallowed, and
early in the second half he latched onto the rebound of a saved shot to score again.
Sebastien Le Toux took over the league lead in assists with
seven by setting up Antoine Hoppenot for a third Philly goal in the final minutes. The victory pushed Philly (7-5-4) into a second-place tie with New York
(7-6-4), which lost its second straight game.
-- The LA Galaxy handed Chivas USA its seventh straight loss with a 1-0 win over rookie Gyasi Zardes'
header off a Landon Donovan free kick late in the first half. Chivas USA has lost the games by a margin of 19-2.
Saturday ...
-- Real Salt Lake took over the lead in the Western Conference from FC Dallas with a 2-0 win over the Seattle Sounders on goals by Kyle Beckerman and Robbie Findley.
-- Walker Zimmerman, passed over for the U.S. U-20 World
Cup team, became the 1,000th player to score in MLS history when his header gave FC Dallas a 2-2 tie with Sporting Kansas City. Dallas came back with two goals in the last two minutes to remain
unbeaten at home in 2013.
-- Mike Magee made it six goals in six games with the winning goal in the Chicago
Fire's 2-1 comeback win at Columbus.
-- An early penalty kick by Chris Pontius held up as D.C. United beat the San Jose Earthquakes for a 1-0
victory that snapped a club record 13-game winless streak. Week
