[MLS TRANSACTIONS] Clarence Goodson, who has spent his last five and half seasons in Scandinavia, is returning to MLS to
play for the San Jose Earthquakes. He leaves Brondby, which narrowly avoided relegation in Denmark's Superliga last season and suffered from financial problems, and will join the Quakes after the Gold
Cup.
Goodson, who attended the University of Maryland and played for FC Dallas for three seasons, had a three-year stint with IK Start of Norway before joining Brondby of Denmark, where
he played only 19 of 33 games in 2012-13.
The 31-year-old central defender was also a member of the 2010 U.S. World Cup squad and started for the USA at the 2011 Gold Cup. His only
appearance in the Hexagonal was against Costa Rica.
He'll join a team that has only one shutout all season and given up 1.47 goals a game, 15th among 19 teams in MLS.
-- The
Portland Timbers signed 18-year-old Jamaican defender
Alvas Powell on loan from Jamaican Premier League side Portmore United FC for the remainder of the 2013
season. He is considered one of the top prospects to come out of Jamaica in recent years, having played for the Reggae Boyz in their last three World Cup qualifiers.
Powell helped the
Jamaica qualify for the 2011 U-17 World Cup and captained the Jamaica U-20 national team to a quarterfinal finish in the 2013 Concacaf U-20 Championships.
-- There have been lost of
waiver moves in the last two days as clubs drop players on semi-guaranteed contracts prior to July 1. If a player on a semi-guaranteed contract is waived after July 1, his salary or settlement amount
will count against the team’s salary budget.
