Shea replaces injured Gatt on Gold Cup roster

[USA MEN] Brek Shea, who had a strong showing in the USA's 6-0 win over Guatemala on Friday night, won't be returning to Stoke City quite so soon. He was named to the USA's Gold Cup roster to replace Joshua Gatt, who has been ruled out of the tournament with a knee injury suffered a week ago while playing for his Norwegian team, Molde.

Shea was originally only scheduled to play in Friday's game. He missed the recent series of five matches to continue his rehabilitation in Dallas and was supposed to join Stoke, where he did not settle in after a late January transfer, for pre-season training.

It's the third time in the last 18 months Gatt has been forced out of a national team camp because of injuries. He missed 2012 Olympic qualifying with the U-23s and  a pair of World Cup qualifiers against Jamaica in September.

"It's a very unfortunate situation for Josh," Coach Jurgen Klinsmann said in a statement. "This is now a couple of times that he has been injured after receiving a call-up to the national team, and it must be frustrating and disappointing. He has been making great progress and we were really looking forward to the opportunity to see him in action. We wish him all the best."

D.C. United midfielder Chris Pontius was added to the pool of 12 players still eligible to be chosen for any additional changes to the 23-player roster. In addition to a change for injury, teams are allowed to make up to four changes to the roster in the 24 hours following their final group match.

The Gold Cup Committee recently agreed on adjustments to the tournament to allow all teams to make up to three changes to their 35-man and 23-man rosters. All non-injury final roster changes had to be made by noon ET on Saturday.
