Mexico's nightmare continue; Martinique wins in dying seconds

[GOLD CUP: Group A] Mexico's troubles continued as it fell to Panama, 2-1, in their opening game at the Gold Cup.

The Canaleros had never beaten Mexico in nine previous meetings and entered the game having been shut out in all of their three June World Cup qualifiers, but they were deserving winners with goals from Gabriel Torres at the beginning of both halves.

Panama could have been up by two or three goals in the first half, and the pro-Mexico crowd of 56,822 started to jeer the Tri when it equalized shortly before the end of the first half on Marco Fabian's goal.

On the left wing, Alberto Quintero tormented the shaky Mexico line, getting taken down for the penalty Torres converted in the seventh minute and sending in the cross Torres tapped in at the near post.

The best chance after that for Mexico came when Fabian hit the post.

The loss dropped Mexico's 2013 record to two wins, three losses and eight ties in 13 games. It was only the Tri's third defeat in the group stage at the Gold Cup after losses to South Africa in 2005 and Honduras in 2007.

After the game, fans pelted Mexico coach Jose Manuel de la Torre with objects when he left the field. The usually evasive Chepo was honest in his assessment of his team's performance.

“This is not the soccer we are accustomed to seeing in our national team,” Chepo said.

For almost a month, he has dogged with questions about his future, and again he was asked if he would resign.

“No,” he said. “You asked a yes or no question, and I'm answering directly and clearly.”

In Sunday's opener at the Rose Bowl, Martinique beat Canada, 1-0, on long-range volley by 38-year-old Fabrice Reuperne in the dying seconds of stoppage time to open the 2013 Gold Cup in sensational style.

Les Matinino were deserving winners of a match they dominated, finishing with a 27-8 edge in shots.

Reuperne, who spent 10 years in France and Greece before returning home to Martinique, is holdover from 2002 Gold Cup quarterfinal team.

I think that Torres' second goal was of a higher level of difficulty than the term "tap in" implies. That was a good good goal.

I'm not condoning violence in Football stadiums...however, the Mexicans have got nothing on the English and Greeks of which I have spent years in both countries. The English are "violent" criminals who will "slit your throat" if you are wearing the oppositions scarf...West Ham, Man U and City...the list goes on! In Greece when Panathinaikos, Olympiakos and PAOK get together we're talking 60-80.000 lovers of their clubs! One thing the Greeks are obsessed with are the "FLAIRS!" One poor man had one travel from one side of the stadium to the other and was "LODGED" IN HIS THROAT! KILLED HIM INSTANTLY! Chris...your comment regarding MEXICANS goes most probably to every FOOTBALLING nation around the globe. It is "something" the United States will never understand...but one thing is for sure...I AM FRIENDS WITH AN ABUNDANCE OF ETHNICITY AND MEXICANS ARE ONE OF THEM. HAVE YOU EVER VISITED THE AZTECA? WONDERFUL! LET'S BE CAREFUL WITH OUR COMMENTS!

Keep making excuses, instead of addressing the problem. Had a great respectful time down in San Diego for the Guatemala match, and leaving tonight for Portland. Maybe you guys could join me???? Furthermore, last time I checked, "understanding", does not portend disrespectful behavior, period. And Ric, classless is an adjective to describe the behavior, a behavior that has become more than just a trend within the stands at mexico games. Thus my comment "as always". Get over it. The fact you and Luis feel so insulted by my comment shows you don't have the capacity to voice a condemnation against the stupidity. You both had every opportunity to so before I posted. Your both on the site enough.

Chris, is used to small crowds of fans in Usa games so therefore less idiots. In Mexico they dont riot after championships and tip over cars or rob local businesses in celebration. Every country has their version of idiots. Usa is no stranger to them in sports. Just like we all have people making idiotic comments like yours. The USA has you Chris!!

Unfortunately, this has turned into the SA-is-Racist, Don't-Dare-Criticize-Mexico-or-anyone-Hispanic-but-I love-Chivas forum. If you do then you will be called a racist, an idiot, and maybe even threatened with violence. Oh, and don't dare go back at them because they will cry to the editors (which they have done). Worst, if you do criticize hispanics then they will come back with a stunning criticism of America - how we don't attract as large crowds as they do in their country, how SA writers are so ignorant and racist they don't write as much about Martinique beating Canada but, of course, were they not to write about Mexico or give it equal billing to Canada then they would also be called racist (although they are afraid to use this word anymore).......And always pay close attention to the 'facts' they use to back up their agenda - one of them claimed Hartwick won the NCAA title with a bunch of big burly longballers and when it was pointed out that was a lie, this poster said nothing..........Pity this is what the forum has become.
