Atletico President Hails Villa Signing

Atletico Madrid on Tuesday completed the signing of David Villa from Barcelona. The fee for the 31-year-old Spain striker was just $2.7 million, rising to $6.6 million if Villa sees out the entirety of his three-year contract with Atletico. Should he be sold within that timeframe, Barca would recoup 50 percent of the proceeds.

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo believes the deal is a coup for the current Copa del Rey holder. "Many Spanish and foreign teams would have sacrificed a lot to have Villa in their squads and we have paid a very low price for him, so we're very pleased about that," Cerezo told Radio Nacional de Espana. "The most important factor in the deal was that we have wanted to sign Villa for a long time and that's why we're so happy. We wanted to sign him when he went to Valencia from Zaragoza, and now he belongs to us."

Villa, Spain’s all-time leading scorer, started less than half of Barca’s games last season, scoring ten goals. He will be expected to fill the goal scoring void left by Radamel Falcao’s departure for Monaco this summer.
