There are myriad reasons the 2012 Supporters Shield winner is struggling this season, and San Jose is actively in upgrade mode. Jordan
, a left-sided defender/midfielder who has played for more than a decade in England, has been signed.
Stewart, 31, joins U.S. defender Clarence Goodson
, who returned to MLS last week and went to the Quakes, which retained his rights even though he left MLS after the 2007 season.
excited to add Jordan to our squad,” said Earthquakes interim head coach Mark Watson
in a club statement. “He came and trained with us last year and
did very well. He brings a lot of experience at the highest level of soccer and he will be an excellent addition the club.”
Stewart briefly represented England on its U-18 and U-21
teams, and has played for many English clubs, as well as Skoda Xanthi in Greece. He began his career in the Premier League with Leicester City, and has also played for Watford, Derby County, Sheffield
United, Millwall, Notts Country and Coventry City in the top three levels of English soccer.
He will be able to play for the Quakes when MLS receives his international transfer
certificate (ITC) and he is issued a P-1 work visa.
