Ticos put away Cuba in second half

[GOLD CUP: Group C] Michael Barrantes scored two goals and the Columbus Crew's Jairo Arrieta added a third as Costa Rica shook off a sluggish first half to beat Cuba, 3-0, in their Gold Cup Group C game on Tuesday in Portland, Ore.

Barrantes, one of four Ticos based in Scandinavia, scored on a left-footed shot from the edge of the penalty area to put Costa Rica ahead in the 51st minute.

Substitute Kenny Cunningham came on to energize the Tico attack and set up Arrieta, one of four Costa Rica starters from MLS, for the second goal.

Barrantes scored a second goal and had a third goal unjustly called off on an offside call against Arrieta.

Costa Rica's captain was Real Salt Lake forward Alvaro Saborio. Rodney Wallace of the Portland Timbers scored as did Roy Miller of the New York Red Bulls at center back.

The loss extended Cuba's winless streak in the Gold Cup to 12 games dating back to the 2003 tournament.

That first half was the worst I've seen Costa Rica play all year. They didn't seem capable of stringing 2 passes together. Fortunately they improved in the second half.
Barrantes scores regularly for his team in Norway, but it had been a couple of years since he had done so for Costa Rica. The Tico fans were really getting down on him and he had lost his once automatic starting spot on the team, so these two goals couldn't have come at a better time.
