Beckham Exploring Florida MLS Franchise

  • ESPN , Wednesday, July 17, 2013 2:25 PM
David Beckham is exploring the possibility of launching an MLS expansion franchise in Florida, ESPN reports. The former LA Galaxy player, who visited Miami last month accompanied by Bolivian billionaire Marcelo Claure, had a clause in his Galaxy contract that would give him the option to take up ownership of an MLS expansion club for $25 million. Claure tried unsuccessfully to start a Florida-based MLS franchise with the backing of La Liga giant Barcelona in 2009.

"It will be in a few months maybe but it's important to get it right," Beckham told The Sun. "This is a big decision where I'll have my franchise and how I'm going to do it. It's something I'm excited about."

Florida does not currently have an MLS franchise, ever since the Tampa Bay Mutiny and Miami Fusion both folded in 2001. Neither do the next-closest 12 or so states in the region.
