Chelsea: No Mata or Luiz Deal for Rooney

Chelsea has reacted furiously to suggestions that the club was willing to make either Juan Mata or David Luiz a makeweight in its prospective deal for Wayne Rooney, which Manchester United rejected. According to the Guardian, the episode appears to have damaged relations between the clubs, as Chelsea felt compelled to release a statement.

"Chelsea Football Club can confirm that, yesterday, it made a written offer to Manchester United for the transfer of Wayne Rooney," said a spokesman. "Although the terms of that offer are confidential, for the avoidance of doubt and contrary to what is apparently being briefed to the press in Sydney, the proposed purchase does not include the transfer or loan of any players from Chelsea to Manchester United."

Meanwhile, Coach Jose Mourinho had gone on record on Tuesday saying that no senior players would leave the club ahead of the new season.

The Europa League champion reportedly offered $30.3 million in cash for the Rooney on Tuesday, but United has since said that it is not willing to sell the England international to a rival. Chelsea is thought to be Rooney’s preferred destination after the striker was told by new coach David Moyes that he is behind Dutchman Robin van Persie in the Old Trafford pecking order.
