After Millonarios in his native Colombia, the Seattle Sounders have loaned Fredy Montero
Sporting Lisbon with an option to buy Montero on a permanent transfer.
Montero, 25, started 19 games for Millonarios after joining the club in January and he scored a team-high seven
Sporting is one of the big three of Portuguese soccer along with Lisbon rival Benfica and current champion Porto though it has struggled in recent years. It has not won the
Portuguese league title since 2002 and finished seventh last season.
Montero is one of 22 players Sporting Lisbon has brought in this season -- including 11 players (Oguchi Onyewu
among them) who have returned from loan spells at other clubs. He was brought in to replace young Dutchman Ricky van
, who was sold to Norwich City.
Montero, Seattle's all-time leading scorer with 47 goals in MLS play, was a three-time MLS All-Star and 2009 MLS Newcomer of the Year.
He requested a move abroad after four seasons with the Sounders, who have struggled in his absence and have fallen into seventh place in the Western Conference.
