Berhalter out as Hammarby coach

[AMERICANS ABROAD] Former U.S. World Cup player Gregg Berhalter's tenure as head coach at Swedish second division club Hammarby is over. He was fired in Wednesday and replaced by former midfielder Thomas Dennerby. Hammarby was tied for seventh place in the Superettan at the halfway mark with 21 points in 16 games.

Berhalter joined Hammarby after retiring from the LA Galaxy as player-assistant coach after the 2011 season and was in the second year of his contract. Both the Galaxy and Hammarby are owned by AEG.

Hammarby has the second best defense in the league with 10 goals allowed but has scored only 12 goals (tied for the second worst offense).

"Gregg has brought order to our defensive game and has good discipline in the squad, but unfortunately we have not seen good enough dividends in the offense," Hammarby chairman Kent Hertzell told the club website. "Therefore, we chose to terminate cooperation with Gregg. We believe that we need to get a new force and new voice on the team."
