Klinsmann: Holden injury could be 'very serious'

[GOLD CUP: Final] U.S. national team midfielder Stuart Holden, who capped his comeback summer by starting in Sunday's Gold Cup final, had to go off with a knee injury suffered in the first half. Afterwards, U.S. national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann said everyone was very concernd about the injury that could be "very serious."

Holden, who was sidelined for most of two years following a knee injury suffered in March 2011 playing for Bolton Wanderers in England, was the only player to stay with the USA for entire series of five qualifiers and friendlies and then the Gold Cup in order to accelerate his comeback.

He was rewarded with a start in midfield on Sunday ahead of Mix Diskerud, but he had to go off after colliding with Panama’s Alberto Quintero.

Holden’s surgically repaired left knee hit Quintero's knee, but the injury was to Holden's right knee on which he put his weight as he braced for the challenge.
