Holden suffers torn ACL in right knee

[USA MEN] An MRI evaluation on Monday confirmed that U.S. national team midfielder Stuart Holden suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee in Sunday's Gold Cup final.

Holden, who capped his comeback summer by starting in the Gold Cup final, will consult with the medical teams of U.S. Soccer and Bolton Wanderers to formulate a treatment plan.

"We are absolutely devastated for Stuart," said U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann in a statement. "He is such a great part of our team on the field and the locker room. He worked tremendously hard to recover from previous injuries and had really come back into form. He was fully prepared to head back to Bolton and challenge for a starting spot. Now he will have our full support as he goes down this road again, and we will be with him every step of the way."

Holden, who was sidelined for most of two years following a knee injury suffered in March 2011 playing for Bolton Wanderers in England, was the only European-based player to stay with the USA for entire series of five qualifiers and friendlies and then the Gold Cup in order to accelerate his comeback.

He was rewarded with a start in midfield on Sunday ahead of Mix Diskerud, but he had to go off after colliding with Panama’s Alberto Quintero.

Holden’s surgically repaired left knee hit Quintero's knee, but the injury was to Holden's right knee on which he put his weight as he braced for the challenge.

Dammit, I understand SH wants to be that hard-tackling midfielder but at some point he's gotta understand his primary value to the team is not tackling. This is the Jack Wilshere saga as well. Hopefully Wilshere figures out that his value to England is his vision, distribution and hunger to take on defenders. The game needs these types of players for the offense they create rather than the attacks they disrupt. Get well, Stu!

Love the can-do attitude Stu and we're all behind you for a rapid and full recovery. In the meanwhile, give R2's advice some thought. You are special going forward and we need you on the pitch.

While I completely agree that Holden is a better attacker than defender, the torn right ACL in the gold cup final wasn't because of a tackle. He got slightly bumped and landed awkwardly on his over compensating right leg, and there goes the acl. You can't play central midfield and not play defense. If you only want to play one way, play up front, and score lots of goals so no one complains that you don't defend. I'm sure Holden is reflecting on his readiness to put in so many minutes leading up to that final game. And in hindsight would have choose to sit out the final game and get back to Bolton and continue getting back to full strength. Back to the point though, you have to play defense and make tackles in the central midfield. Especially against better teams. You can tear an acl being tackled too when you have the ball. He can't catch a break. I wish Holden a quick recovery, and I'm sure we haven't seen the last of him because of his drive and determination.

Terrible. Any one know how long he is supposed to be out this time? Hope he makes a full recovery but starting to look like he has the injury bug. Another John O'Brien...

The tackle by de Jong was straight dirty tackle, in a friendly no less. Hatchet job by a butcher. However the Evan's tackle was the result of indiscretion on Stuart's part, he's a feisty little devil, he had let the ball slip away, and went in hard against a much bigger guy trying to get it back. Evans went in even harder, but that one was a tackle Stuart should learn to avoid. This last one was just bad luck, normal run of play bump. Let's just all pray for him a speedy recovery in time for WC2014.
