Gold Cup star Brek Shea injured in friendly vs. Philly

[USA MEN] Brek Shea, who scored Gold Cup gamewinners against Costa Rica and in the final against Panama, suffered a knee injured from a tackle by the Philadelphia Union's Matt Kassel in a friendly on Tuesday while playing for his English club Stoke City.

“Obviously I’m pretty upset right now,” said Shea, who scored in the 19th minute and left the field in the 27th minute of Stoke’s 2-0 win. “I was excited to get back to Stoke and get ready for the season. Hopefully it’s not as bad as it feels, and we’ll find out tomorrow.”

Shea left the stadium on crutches and will get an MRI on his knee Wednesday.

The tackle by the 23-year-old Kassel, who has played only 33 minutes for the Union in MLS this season, was described as “ugly” by MLSSoccer.com’s Dave Zeitlin and “nasty” by the DelcoTimes.com’s Matthew De George.

“I thought it was a very, very poor challenge by the boy,” said Stoke coach Mark Hughes. “What the hell he was thinking of, I have no idea. … (Shea is) disappointed, I think we all are, because it was a poor challenge. You don’t expect that. It’s a friendly game. You need to protect your fellow professional. And I don’t think the guy did that. Don’t know who he was. Maybe he was trying to make a name for himself, I don’t know. He went the wrong way about it.”

Another example of the MLS's 'butcher' mentality enabled by the imported Brit who heads the MLS ref crew. It's friendly and Kassel does a macho challenge.

"Butcher" is a little harsh tag to place on MLS. Agree it was an un necessary challenge in a friendly. Kid trying to impress, and play hard. Wrong way to go about it. MLS is a more physical league IMO. I would rather see a more fair, physical stye vs. patsies flailing all over the pitch at the slightest of contact. Holden was injured by non MLS players the last few X, along w/ numerous other injuries
that occur that are not highlighted in such a over glorified manner. Hopefully injury is minor.
