In his introductory press conference, Clint Dempsey
made it clear he wanted to be home -- as in settled in
one place after years on the road and in a foreign country. The toil the travel takes was evident as he missed the Seattle Sounders' practice Tuesday with a virus that Coach Sigi Schmid
said his new signing picked up on his recent travels.
Since returning to pre-season with Tottenham, Dempsey flew from London to Hong Kong and back and then last
week from London to Seattle via San Francisco.
Seattle travels to Toronto FC for what is scheduled to be Dempsey's first match on Saturday.
"We'll see how he feels tomorrow
and where his recovery is," Schmid told
still a long way away from Saturday. We'll see how he feels at the end of the day. The likelihood of him going 90 minutes on Saturday is very small. Whether that's starting and coming off or coming on
as a sub, we'll have to see."
Whether it makes sense for Dempsey to travel with the U.S. national team to its match against Bosnia & Herzegovina on Aug. 14 in Sarajevo might also be
called in question.
Dempsey's only matches since the World Cup 2014 qualifier June 18 against Honduras in Sandy, Utah, were appearances of 70 minutes and 45 minutes in Spurs friendlies at
the Barclays Asia Trophy competition in Hong Kong.
-- The Sounders announced that Dempsey's first home game against Portland on Aug. 25 is a sellout (66,800).
